My path to law school: Not 1, but 2 LSATs

Someone asked me the other day why I didn’t go to law school right after finishing my undergrad. Since I am a “non traditional” student, I figured sharing my story might inspire those like me, and also those who are, in fact, “traditional” law students.

Since I studied Criminology and Law at Suffolk University as an undergrad, the going presumption was that I would be a cop or go to law school. I actually wanted to join the FBI but there were practical reasons I decided it wasn’t a good idea. I took the LSAT during my senior year and got a decent score-not amazing but not bad, either. Nevertheless, my advisor told me it was not good enough for any law school and that I shouldn’t even bother applying. Because I didn’t know anything about anything at the time, I decided to forgo law school and moved to Chicago for a post baccalaureate premed program at Northwestern and Loyola Universities (I have more transcripts attached to my name than I can count on one hand).

Probably my only photo on Suffolk campus, when I was looking for apts before I moved back to Boston for Law school.

After two years in Chicago, I moved to Florida to be close to my grandparents and…wait for it….took more premed classes at Florida Atlantic University. I started working for Apple part time. I applied to Apple on a whim because I really loved troubleshooting and pretty much taught myself all I knew about Macs before I worked for the company. Two promotions later, I was the Lead Creative Trainer at the Ft. Lauderdale store, leading a team of approximately ten other Trainers. I was almost at my three year anniversary with Apple when I decided to go back to [law] school since that was ultimately what I really wanted to do.

LSAT scores expire after five years, so I registered for a Kaplan Prep class, to take it again and score better. I did OK in the class and showed some improvement. I actually ended up getting the same score I did the first time around. And I got into a couple law schools. Fancy that.

I am really happy with the way my pre-law school life turned out. Should I have sought another opinion about my first LSAT scores? Maybe. But I am so grateful for the experience at Apple and the people I have met there. In the end I believe everything happens for a reason. Cliche, I know. But I still believe it to be true. I am right where I am supposed to be…Maybe I could have done without all the premed stuff and the collection of transcripts, but at least it got me to Apple!

So for those of you thinking about a career change, or for the youngsters coming right out of college, whatever time in your life you chose to go to law school is the right time.

And that is all I have to say about that for now.
